The PETRONAS Performing Arts Group (PPAG) will once again share with its audience a sample of Malaysia's unique culture during its latest performance entitled "Repsodi Malaysia" at the Dewan Filharmonik PETRONAS on 29 and 30 April 2005.  A continuation from last year's "Satu Rentak" series, the music ensemble will feature the melodious tunes from a combination of various traditional musical instruments and supported by the modern sounds of an orchestra.

Seven music compositions have been developed for this ensemble by PPAG's own talented composers who have tried to define Malaysian music and through it showcase Malaysia's rich blend of diverse cultures. Speaking at a recent press conference, Encik Abdullah Ahmad, Director, Arts and Culture, said that the task to compose the songs using both traditional and modern musical instruments proved a real challenge as the instruments did not have the same music scale. However, the harmonious sounds produced by each composition resembles the strong diversity and integration of our multi-cultured society.

This unique music ensemble will feature the sounds of the gamelan, rebab, traditional Chinese and Indian instruments, and the orang asli bamboo-made instruments.

The list of repertoire for the performances are Cak Pak Ting Doh by Mohd Yazid Zakaria, Runtun by Muhamed Rajab Md Dali, Iradah by Syed Sharir Faisal Syed Hussain, Tunjang by Faizal Uzir, Teras by Mohd Husin Osman, Tuaian by Ahmad Muriz Che Rose and Belum Selesai by Yuzaifullah Mohd Yusof. Ahmad Muriz will conduct the performances.

PPAG was set up by PETRONAS in 1990 to help preserve and promote Malaysian culture. As cultural ambassadors and a catalyst to the development and preservation of Malaysian culture, Encik Abdullah said PPAG served as the ideal training ground to nurture local music talents who in turn could continue to support its efforts. He said that the country needed such talents as modern day influences such as the electronic media and the internet have affected the interest in traditional music.

PPAG also plans to embark on the research into Malaysia's culture towards helping to continue to preserve and develop our cultural heritage.
